Invisalign uses nearly invisible aligners (it will do the job that metal train track
braces would otherwise do) to straighten your teeth. The aligners are made
from a plastic material using the latest digital treatment planning and 3D
printing technology.
You are given a series of bespoke, custom-made aligners to move your teeth
in the sequence determined by your Invisalign doctor. The aligners are
uniquely developed from your treatment plan, which is created on an
individual basis. Each aligner in this series works individually, making slight
adjustments to tooth position.
When the aligners are placed on the teeth, they apply light pressure to the
teeth which cause the them to gradually shift from their current position to
achieve a straight smile. After approximately two weeks, you will change to
the next pair of aligners, and then the next and so on. This process is the
same throughout your treatment which will gradually straighten your teeth.

Invisalign consists of a series of removable clear plastic trays called aligners
that you can take in and out of the mouth, whereas braces consist of metal
brackets and wires attached to the teeth, which cannot be removed for the
duration of treatment.
The fact that you can remove the Invisalign aligners (required for when you
eat and drink) means that, unlike traditional braces, you do not need to
restrict your consumption of any of your favourite foods, which could cause
traditional braces to break. You should brush your teeth after each meal to
remove any food and plaque that may be present before re-inserting your
aligners to maintain fresh breath and prevent tooth decay.
The aligners need to be worn for at least 22 hours per day to be most
effective and removed only for eating, drinking anything that isn’t water,
brushing and flossing. If they are not worn, the teeth will not move. They are
amazing, but they don’t perform miracles by just sitting in the box!
Braces with brackets and wires may be recommended for more complex
cases that need large/difficult movements of teeth – this will be discussed at
your consultation and recommendations.
Although the name may suggest that they are invisible, they are
not completely invisible, but they are made from a nearly invisible clear
plastic. They are much less noticeable compared to traditional braces as
they are not made of grey metal. Invisalign is very subtle, so nobody may
even notice you’re wearing the aligners. Usually, your friends or colleagues
will notice your new smile before they notice the aligners on your teeth.
Invisalign allows you to view a 3D virtual simulation of your new smile plan
before you start, so you can see how your straightened teeth will look when
your treatment is complete.
Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is easier with Invisalign because you
remove the aligners to brush and floss, this means you can reach more of
your teeth and gums this way compared to wire and bracket braces.
You can carry on eating and drinking the things you enjoy as you can remove
the aligners without worrying about damaging or staining the metallic
brackets and elastic bands used with train tracks.
From your 3D virtual treatment plan (a digital simulation of how your teeth
could move - called a ClinCheck), your Invisalign aligners are 3D printed and
are bespoke to fit your teeth. There are a series of aligners to wear which
gently apply pressure to gradually move teeth to straighten your teeth week
by week.
invisalign treatment starts with a consultation with an invisalign doctor, Dr
James McParlane. Dr James will evaluate your smile and then map out a
precise, customised digital treatment plan that showcases the step-by-step
transformation of your smile. Once you approve your plan, your unique
aligners will be created. You will wear each aligner for 22 hours a day,
changing to a new set of aligners every 1 to 2 weeks, as directed by Dr
James. Each set of aligners will gently and gradually shift your teeth into
place, according to your treatment plan, until you reach your beautiful new
smile.
Straighter teeth are easier to keep clean and remove stains from, giving you
healthier gums and a brighter smile. If you need further treatment as part of
a smile makeover (composite bonding to fix chipped edges or veneers to
change the shape of your tooth), your teeth can be moved into a better
position to make the next stage in your treatment as minimally invasive as
possible – usually meaning less drilling.
Invisalign starts at £1200 for the most basic case but most cases are
approximately £3445, we have a payment schedule to help you spread the
investment required to reach your smile goals over the course of your
treatment which is likely to be around 6 months. To find out how much
straightening your teeth could cost we offer a free, no obligation Smile
Assessment with Dr James McParlane. In most cases, Invisalign treatment is
comparable to the cost of traditional braces. Every patient and their smile is
unique, that is why at your Smile Assessment we build your new smile
together after discussing your goals.
At this appointment we start with a conversation and then photograph your
teeth, following this we discuss the photos taken of your smile to find out
what you don’t like and what you want to change. From here we will discuss
how to build your new smile, what can be achieved and an approximate
cost.
On average Invisalign treatment takes around 6 months. Invisalign can take
anywhere between 2 months and 18 months before treatment is complete.
Invisalign is likely to be less painful than traditional braces as there is no
rubbing of wires and brackets against the cheeks or gums. Initially, you will
feel pressure and the ‘attachments’ can cause some discomfort and
ulceration when they have recently been placed. Any type of brace/tooth
movement will cause some discomfort when pressure is applied to a tooth.
However, you soon get used to this and the pressure you feel when the
teeth are moving is somewhat addictive. Patients tend to enjoy the feeling
of the teeth moving!
These are little ‘buttons’ of white filling material bonded to your tooth for
treatment and then removed after treatment is complete. These may be
needed in different shapes and sizes on different teeth to apply gentle
pressure to move the tooth in a specific direction. Not all teeth may need
them, it depends on what movements are needed and that is why every
treatment plan is unique.
